GEM GUIDE
Distinguishing between precious stones and semi-precious stones
Basically, a distinction is made between gemstones and gemstones or semi-precious stones on the basis of special properties: beauty (color and transparency), rarity and hardness. A gemstone is a Mohs hardness greater than seven.
Mohs hardness was introduced by the mineralogist Friedrich Mohs. Here, minerals are scratched one below the other or with sharp-edged comparative objects. The minerals were ranked by Mohs on a scale of 1 to 10. The softest mineral was assigned a value of 1, while diamond, the hardest mineral, received a value of 10.
